A tiny house. Being off the grid. And I don’t mean that I have a mini-power station with a wall of photovoltaic cells. I mean a house that is so small and so naturally designed that it doesn’t need more than a wood burning stove to heat it. A composting toilet. Candlelight. No TV. Books and my slide collection.
My favorite house books are Home Work by Lloyd Kahn and The Hand Sculpted House by Ianto Evans and Linda Smiley. Both of these books are filled with dream-inducing photos and ideas. They make me believe it can be done.
The only chance mankind has to survive is to embrace sustainability; eliminate needless waste and our current fetishes of devouring and conquering. Nature should guide everything we do–the way we build, the way we plant, the way we eat, the way we produce. Preventing further damage should be our focus, not fixing current symptoms. As with medicine, once symptoms exhibit, disease has already taken hold. The trick is to keep the symptoms from ever occurring. Trying to fix them after they’re here is just more waste.
With this blog I hope to share information and thoughts on how we can all simplify our lives and ease our impact on this beautiful but grossly stressed planet. I’m not interested in looking forward. The key to our survival lies in looking back.
